Beware of Census scams Most people can expect to receive their 2010 Census forms in the mail this week, and I wanted to make you aware of potential scams by people posing as Census workers. Keep the following tips in mind to make sure that you don't fall prey to a scammer: -
The Census will not contact you by e-mail. -
You cannot complete the Census online. -
The Census will not ask for your Social Security number. -
The Census will not ask for your banking, credit card or financial information. -
If a Census worker knocks on your door, they will have a badge, a hand-held device, and Census Bureau canvas bag. The Census is performed every 10 years to get an accurate count of the American population. The information gathered is used to determine how federal money is spent regarding infrastructure projects, emergency services and schools. It also determines congressional representation in Washington, D.C. It is important to complete the 10-question form when it comes to your house, or a census employee may visit your home for your answers. The information you provide is protected, and by law, the Census Bureau cannot share your answers with anyone, including the IRS, FBI, CIA or any other government agency. As always, do not hesitate to contact me for help with any state-related matter.
