Featured Book:
A Nation's Hope: The Story of Boxing Legend Joe Louis

A Nation's Hope: The Story of Boxing Legend Joe Louis

by Matt De La Pena
illustrated by Kadir Nelson

All his life, African American boxing legend Joe Louis fought discrimination at home in the United States.  He then went up against German boxer Max Schmeling during World War II for the world heavyweight title--in a boxing match that united black and white Americans in the U.S. war against Germany.

This beautifully written biography is an excellent read-aloud for students in grades 4-5 who have some background knowledge of World War II and Germany under Hitler.  Matt De La Pena's engaging verse is complemented by the stunning illustrations of Kadir Nelson.

Black, White & Read All Over

Black, White & Read All Over is a collaboration between the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh and Pittsburgh Arts & Lectures to promote family literacy by introducing families to talented children's and young adult writers.  After each program, there is a book signing with the author, so bring your favorite copy to be signed.  And, of course, these books are available through the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh!

Our Library Our FutureDear Educators and Librarians,

The BLAST program has been so fortunate to have your support! Whether you've shown it through positive evaluations, letters of support, a "yes" vote on the referendum, or simply by regularly scheduling us to visit your school... Thank you!

BLAST is dependent on library funding, and we would like to thank all of you who took the time to carefully consider and vote on the voter initiative for public funding for the library on November 8, 2011.  With the overwhelming support demonstrated by the city of Pittsburgh, we look forward to providing on-going, quality service for the community.

Please visit the Our Library, Our Future page of the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh website for more information.

If you have any questions or any ideas that you would like to see in upcoming newsletters, please feel free to e-mail us with your input.  We're here to serve you!
