Anno's Counting Book
author/illustrator:  Mitsumasa Anno

A book for the youngsters - this counting story follows the development of a small village.  Each page has one more of everything (people, trees, houses, etc.) than the previous page, starting with only 1 and ending with 12.  As a bonus, the counting numbers also correspond with the months of the year, allowing children to observe seasonal changes of the landscape.  PreK-Kindergarten

Jack discovers that a plant grown from 1 seed yields 2 seeds.  Each year, his crop expands, but is sometimes decreased by various types of setbacks.  The challenge is keeping up with this book-length word problem using a combination of multiplication, addition, and subtraction.  Make careful calculations, and you may be able to answer the final question.
                                              Grades 3-5

Tech Resources: My StoryMaker

My StoryMaker is a handy piece of online software that allows a user to construct story frames by selecting from a collection of characters, settings, and items.

Characters, such as genies, mermaids, ghosts, and pirates, can be made to interact with items and other characters.  In fact, when the author manipulates the scene and causes such interactions, bits of the story are automatically written.

The user decides which text to keep and can add any additional text if desired, freely editing a story that can expand to be over 50 pages long!  Upon completion, the story can be printed or saved for later.  To use My StoryMaker for free, click here. (http://www.clpgh.org/kids/storymaker/)
