BLAST Pick of the Month

My Name is Sangoel

by Karen Lynn Williams and Khadra Mohammed

"As a refugee from Sudan to the United States, Sangoel is frustrated that no one can pronounce his name correctly until he finds a clever way to solve the problem."

We here at BLAST love this book! My Name is Sangoel is our October program book and we have just started using it with the 3rd grade students in the Pittsburgh Public Schools. During the read aloud, we discuss some of the challenges Sangoel faces. We ask the students, "Do you think Sangoel should change his name? Why?" The discussions have been very interesting!

At the end of the story, Sangoel creates a rebus to teach everyone how to pronounce his name. We turned this into an activity for the 3rd graders where they had to think of a rebus for their own name. They could use their first, middle or last name.

Check out some of their work! Can you guess what the names are?

Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh presents:
My Pittsburgh

My Pittsburgh

Throughout the year, children from across the city have been particiapting in the My Pittsburgh program at their local Carnegie Libraries. These programs showcase a book about Pittsburgh's history and citizens, such as Steel Town by Jonah Winter and Uncle Andy's by James Warhola. After the read aloud, kids are encouraged to use various art supplies to create a picture of their favorite Pittsburgh place or person.

My Pittsburgh is an on-going program. Want to get in on the action? Ask your local children's librarian when the next My Pittsburg program will be!

Protect Your Library

Dear Educators and Librarians,
The BLAST program has been so fortunate to have your support! Whether you've shown it through positive evaluations, letters of support, or simply by regularly scheduling us to visit your school. Thank you!!

BLAST is dependent on library funding and, as many of you know, the struggle to find sustainable  funding is on-going. There are a lot of different ways you can help. Please visit the Pittsburgh Protect You Library website and consider supporting the library and the BLAST program.

If you have any questions or any ideas that you would like to see in upcoming newsletters, please feel free to e-mail us with your input.  We're here to serve you!

Sincerely,

Bonny Yeager and Laura Bandura
